"Curriculum Philosophies II - Mathematics"Solving the Math Training EquationWhat Math Curriculum Is Out There? Is it right for your children? Learn about a variety of math curriculum vendors that match your kids learning styles. Curriculum Vendors: Math·U·See Mad Dog Math DiveIntoMath Wonder Number
It’s that time again – it’s August and most homeschool parents are getting ready for starting their homeschools again. Exploring Homeschooling™ Orange County wants to help in that process by introducing you to a variety of math publishers that will explain the philosophy behind their curriculum at this month's meeting. Come hear from leading curriculum vendors and familiarize yourself with what is out there for your children to help them learn math.
Think about it. If you're already homeschooling or thinking about homeschooling, you have asked yourself a few common questions. Questions such as - where do I start? What do I use to help train my children? How do I know what will work for my kids? In fact, this is one of the most important questions a beginning homeschooling parent will need to answer. Not all at once, mind you – but over time as you develop your philosophy of education for your children. And in order to answer the question, you will need to know two things - what is available for your children and which, of the available programs, are suited to the unique learning styles of your children.
Exploring Homeschooling™ is proud to present to you some outstanding companies, whose representatives will discuss the philosophies and uses of their programs in training children in mathematics. Samplers, catalogs, and flyers from these and other vendors that are not able to attend will be available. And, of course, curriculum materials will be on hand for purchase. This unique session is sure to help you gain a better understanding of what to do in your homeschool to cover math with your children.
Dan Sinclair will be discussing the Math·U·See training system. Math·U·See believes it is essential for a student to memorize basic facts and formulas, and we feel it is equally important that students learn concepts and applications. But in order for this kind of learning to occur, the teachers (parents) must understand math and they must have a tool to be able to show students math so they can understand it. The lesson by lesson videos/DVD's teach the parents the concepts and show them how to use the manipulatives, so the students "see" and comprehend math. Together with included text books, students learn how to perform math operations and understand why, so they can apply them to everyday life.
Julie Kotoff will be discussing Mad Dog Math, a supplement to any math curriculum used in any home school setting. This curriculum supplment takes basic math facts and breaks them down into bite-sized pieces that any child can master. A child progresses through a series of timed drills at his own pace, memorizing and mastering them once and for all. With each success comes confidence; with confidence comes more success. Students, for the first time, feel empowered by their gained knowledge and are not intimidated by math ever again. Where they once said, "Math is hard; I hate math!", they now say, "Math is easy; math is fun!"
Dr. David Shormann will be discussing Dive Into Math, a product which utilizes recently developed software and hardware technology to create math and science lectures on a computer whiteboard that supplement the Saxon MathTM curriculum. Dr. Shormann connects new concepts with previous ones to teach your children how one concept builds on another while working three to five practice problems. Concepts that are not clear the first time can be reviewed as many times as necessary. Dr. Shormann will show how incremental learning ensures that your child knows all the math all the time.
Joe Melanson will be discussing Wonder Number, a unique and revolutionary approach to reaching students in an exciting and fun way. The Wonder Number Learning System includes sixteen lessons that will help students learn math concepts from basic counting to simplifying fractions. The Wonder Number System is adaptable to nearly all levels of learning - capable of being used to teach concepts from basic counting numbers to probability. In fact, it can supplement any math curriculum- just use the worksheets from your curriculum to practice on the Wonder Number Board.
